Year 1

WELCOME TO YEAR 1

It has been lovely to welcome Year 1 to their new classroom and we look forward to sharing all the exciting learning that will take place during Term 1 and Term 2.

In English, Read Write Inc. will be used to teach and support children’s phonics, comprehension and writing skills. We will be using the sounds we have learnt and applying this to reading words and books each week. The children will be practising the skills of holding a sentence, recording sentences with accuracy, using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces, as well as improving basic sentences to make them more interesting.

In Maths, we begin the term with place value within 10 before applying these skills to addition and subtraction. The children will also be looking at shape. Each day the children will answer basic addition and subtraction calculations within 20.

This term we are looking at materials in Science. The children will be distinguishing between objects and materials and describing their basic properties. We will also begin to touch upon our season’s topic, beginning with Autumn and looking at the changes that occur during the year.

Our first topic of the year is ‘Creak, Crack, Crash’ focussing upon dinosaurs. The children will learn about the features of dinosaurs and the discovery of dinosaurs, looking closely at Mary Anning.

We will be focusing on sketching and shading in Art, applying this skill to create our own dinosaur drawings. The children will then move onto DT and using clay to sculpt fossils.

PE will be on a Tuesday and a Thursday, focussing on gymnastics, increasing balance and moving in a range of ways. The children will also be developing their ball skills, throwing and catching with more accuracy.

We will be looking at Christianity in RE, focussing on the creation story before moving onto why Christmas matters to Christians.

A homework grid has been sent out which links to our learning. If the children complete any of these tasks, we would love for you to send them into school so they can be shared with us.
